Information

Since June 2019, Sophie von Fromm works as PhD student at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena, Germany, and is an active part of the soil resources group at ETH Zurich since December 2019. Her research project focusses on understanding large-scale controls on organic carbon in (sub)tropical soils in Sub-Saharan Africa. She uses a wide range of methods, including field measurements, statistical tools and lab techniques. In addition, she is involved in the development and maintainance of the international soil radiocarbon database (ISRaD).

Sophie did her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Geoecology at the Technische Universitaet Bergakademie Freiberg in Saxony, Germany. For her bachelor thesis, she went to the Amazon basin in Brazil, investigating soil respiration and soil chemistry. She did her master thesis at the MPI-BGC and developed a sequential chemical extraction technique to study the radiocarbon age of soils from different parent materials in Central Germany.

Her research interests include:

  • Identification of soil and climate drivers that explain the variance of SOC under (sub)tropical climates
  • Quantification and investigation of labile/stable isotopes (13C, 14C, 15N) in soils
  • Development of international soil databases
